Crow’s is launching the third year of paid Artist Cross-Training Programs (AXTP) designed to provide cross-disciple paid training and flexible employment for under-employed arts-workers in our theatre and broader arts community.

Each year, the program will roll out cross-training cohorts catering to specific training requirements: including performer/creators in production, writers in direction, technicians in design, actors in playwriting, and various combinations. Providing training and jobs for under-employed arts-workers will be top priority for all cohorts.

In this, the third year of the program, the cohort will focus on developing skills and experience in theatrical direction, management, and producing for any artist, technician, production or other arts-workers who is interested.

The program will include hands on training to give participating arts-workers the skills and knowledge required in the creation of mounting a theatrical production.

The program is intended to offer additional skills training to under employed professional arts workers within the GTA: therefore technicians, operators, labourers, specialists, heads of departments, actors, writers, etc., are encouraged to apply.

Paid Training Program

Participants in the program will commit to fulfilling a minimum 80 hours, paid on an hourly basis, in a theatrical department under a mentoring artist between October 2018 – May 2019.

Direction
Production Management
Stage Management

Instruction will be led by the participant's mentor, though there will be additional opportunities for coaching and consultation from additional resources and people.

ABOUT CROW’S THEATRE

Founded in 1983, Crow’s Theatre has been a leading force in the Canadian theatre landscape, recognized for provocative and award-winning new theatre work that has toured nationally and internationally.

Since 2010-11, Crow’s has undertaken and is nearing completion of the planning and construction of its first permanent home: Streetcar Crowsnest. The new state-of-the-art performing arts facility opened its doors in January 2017 - offering a dynamic spectrum of affordable contemporary theatre, all-ages arts events, wide-ranging community programming and partnerships.

Streetcar Crowsnest houses three venues for cultural and neighbourhood programming and events: a multi-configurational Guloien Theatre (up to 220 seats); the Scotiabank Community Studio (up to 90 seats) for smaller performances, rehearsals and community activities; and a beautiful Lobby Bar adjacent to a full-service 60-seat restaurant.

ARTIST CROSS-TRAINING PROGRAM: THE INCEPTION

Since 2012, Crow’s has engaged in multiple phases of community consultation related to its facility planning. Consultations within the cultural communities yielded a wide range of input and interests, including appeals for paid professional development, skills-training and flexible employment for local arts-workers, on and off the stage.

This input spurred our reflection and consideration. The creation of theatre is increasingly collaborative and cross-disciplinary. The lines between director, actor, designer, production and technical roles are ever blurred and dynamic. Boundary-bending can be attributed to the broadening of artistic practice, insufficient employment opportunities, an environment where work is developed on smaller stages with fewer resources, and the pursuit of flexibility and sustainability of/for our artists.

In response, Crow’s is launching the first phase of paid artist training programs designed to provide cross-discipline paid training and flexible employment for under-employed artsworkers in our theatre and broader arts community.

Each year, the program will roll out cross-training cohorts focused on different skills/trades within the performing arts industry. Providing training and jobs for the most under-employed arts-workers will be top priority for all cohorts.
