THE WOLVES: Meet The Team

Sep 5, 2018

LEFT QUAD. RIGHT QUAD. LUNGE.

The Wolves has been nominated for a Pulitzer prize, listed as one of the top 25 plays from the last 25 years by The New York Times and won the 2015 Relentless Award for Playwriting. The Toronto premiere of this powerful, evocative play by Sarah DeLappe is set to open the 2018-19 Crow’s Theatre Season on a soaring high note this October.

Teaming up with The Howland Company  the award winning theatre-makers behind recent hit and Dora Award-nominated Punk Rock and best-of-fringe production Entrances and Exits – we are in for a kickingly vital, and energetically powerful theatre experience this Fall.

With rehearsals on the way, we asked the Wolves-squad to tell us more about the play.

Duh! It’s a super perceptive and authentic depiction of teenage life and relationships.” (Rachel Cairns)

“…an incredible, poetic and ground-breaking script that hits the nail on the head of what it’s like to be an athlete, a scholar and a teenage girl all at the same time.” (Ruth Goodwin)

“The specificity of cadence within individual characters in relation to those around them is done with impeccable orchestration all the while ensuring that each one of them be perpetually in process.” (Heath V. Salazar)

I am able to see myself and parts of my adolescence represented in each of these girls. It is extremely relatable, heartbreaking and a marathon from the beginning to the end.” (Brittany Kay)

Playful, vividly imaginative, unapologetically honest, raucously humorous, and a necessary exploration to promote a safe space where people, assigned female at birth, are free to express their perspectives on how the world around them is run.” (Amaka Umeh)

I. LOVE. THIS. PLAY. I love how frequently a character in the piece makes a compelling argument filled with "likes" and "ums". I love how imperfect each player is, and how they never give up trying to be better.” (Annelise Hawrylak)

These teenage girls don't just talk about boys, but about the world and issues that they are curious about and are important to them. What I especially love about the script is that Sarah DeLappe emphasizes the beauty and melody in which teenage girls speak and express themselves, rather than perpetuating the stereotype of valley-girl "likes" and "OMG’s" that tend to make fun of their intelligence.” (Ula Jurecka)

FIERCE and UNAPOLOGETIC! However, underneath there is a real softness and sincerity at the core of this play which only helps further accentuate this play's femininity and ultimately how multifaceted women truly are.” (Aisha Evelyna)

This play captures the heartbeat of young women, of female athletes, of teenage friendships, of that wild, ruthless energy of a team. I couldn't be more excited to share it with Toronto audiences.” (Hallie Seline)

If you’ll pardon our pun, this is theatre you’re going to have to wolf down! And we are definitely not crying wolf, you should get your tickets today.
