    A new holiday tradition comes to Toronto’s East End! The corner of Dundas and Carlaw will light up from December 5, 2020 to February 20, 2021 with a pop up destination experience.

    This holiday season, Crow’s Theatre teams up with restaurant partner Gare de l’Est to inaugurate a new East End holiday tradition. Beginning Saturday December 5th at dusk,  Crow’s Theatre will unveil a brand new holiday window installation across its 15 windows at Streetcar Crowsnest at the corner of Dundas and Carlaw, while Gare de l'Est will offer an array of special holiday treats and drinks on weekends. The event also gives neighbours a chance to celebrate its newly opened street corner parkette, as we celebrate the spirit of Toronto’s east end during the holiday season.     

    “We all know that the holiday season is going to be different this year, and we wanted to do something special to create east end holiday cheer. We’re turning the street corner into a cozy, enchanting and pandemic-friendly space where the neighbourhood, and especially families, can be delighted by a beautiful piece of art on a cold winter night,” said Crow’s Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director, Marie Farsi. 

    Created by Toronto visual artist Soyeon Kim, lighting designer Jareth Li, and sound designer David Mesiha, Crow’s Theatre’s window display is open for viewing after sunset, when the lighting reveals Kim’s stunningly detailed artwork, kaleidoscopes and dioramas. In addition, Streetcar Crowsnest resident brasserie Gare de l’Est will open its outdoor Pop-Up Holiday Café, between 4PM-8PM on weekends, offering hot drinks, including mulled wine and cocoa.

    The corner of Dundas and Carlaw, nestled between Leslieville, Riverside and Riverdale in Toronto’s East End, is also home to a new piece of public art, Pierre Poussin’s ‘Brick Obelisk’, along with a Heritage Toronto digital walking tour of the industrial roots of the neighbourhood.     CREATIVE TEAM

     

    Soyeon Kim is a Korean-born artist and educator currently living in Toronto, Ontario. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts and Bachelor of Education from York University. She has participated in artist residencies at The Hermitage (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Spark Box Studios (Picton, Ontario). As a children’s picture book illustrator, she has published: You Are Stardust, Wild Ideas, Is This Panama? Sukaq and the Raven, You Are Never Alone, A Last Goodbye, and Once Upon an Hour. She has participated in TD Book Week 2018, visiting schools and libraries in Northern British Columbia. In 2017, she was invited to the Adelaide Writers’ Week (Australia) for the Kids’ Weekend, where she collaborated with kids and families to create a collaborative mural based on You Are Stardust. She is also a recipient of Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Illustrator’s Award.

     

    Marie Farsi is a theatre maker and director primarily focused on the creation of new work. She works between Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, both in English and French. She has directed for and collaborated with companies from across the country such as Théâtre La Seizième, the Stratford Festival, Neworld, and Porte-Parole. Since 2018, she has worked as the Associate Artistic Director at Crow’s Theatre. She is also the co-founder and co-Artistic Director of the formal experimental company Babelle Theatre in Vancouver, which is the Company-in-Residence at the Arts Club for this season 2020/21. She was recipient of the 2019 Ray Michal Award for Outstanding Body of Work by an Emerging Director, the 2020 Dora Award for Outstanding Direction in the Musical Theatre division, and the 2020 Toronto Theatre Critics' Award for Best Director of a Musical. 

     

    Jareth Li is a stage designer based in Toronto. Select lighting designs include: Serving Elizabeth (Western Canada Theatre), Copy That (Tarragon Theatre); Hilot Means Healer (Cahoots Theatre), Ring of Fire (Citadel Theatre); The Wolves (Crow’s Theatre, and The Howland Company) Casimir and Caroline, Punk Rock (The Howland Company); Iphigenia and The Furies (Saga Collectif); Chautauqua (Pearle Harbour); The Winter’s Tale, Portia’s Julius Caesar (Shakespeare in the Ruff); Black Boys (Buddies In Bad Times) Prairie Nurse (Factory & TIP). Jareth is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada. He is a stagecraft instructor at York University, and also a proud east-ender. Online @Jareth.Li

     

    David Mesiha is Toronto & Vancouver based award-winning music composer, sound/video designer and Theatre maker. David’s practice centres around examining questions of form in interactive and performance arts. Chosen credits include as co-creator & Music Composer for Foreign Radical (Theatre Conspiracy). Sound designer The Humans (Arts Club Theatre), Antigone (YPT), Oraltorio (IFT), Sound of the Beast (Theatre Passe Muraille) and Terminus (Pi Theatre), Mixed Media: Miss Vancouver, The Relay, Forget Me Not (Online components), Film & tV:+-40, Spirit Glitch, The Mission, Toward You. David is Artistic Director of Theatre Conspiracy and a core member of The Cultch’s Digital Storytelling Team, focusing on creating innovative trans-media experiences.  He is also leading the development and creation of Same Difference, an immersive mixed media theatre piece that deconstructs issues of identity, belonging, sameness and difference through the viewpoint of immigrants and refugees.

     

    Isabel Martins, like you, has spent 2020 in a liminal state. Like jam or jelly before it's set. When fruit is caught in mid transformation. We, too, are altogether becoming something more before we can start spreading again. Spreadable just not contagious. But toast needs jam, donuts need jelly. Unassailable facts! Trust in your pots of bubbling fruit.     Joseph Bauman is a furniture maker and product designer.  Born and raised on a small farm in Port Dover, educated at the University of Toronto and Sheridan College, Joseph crafts simple, helpful objects for the home with his parter Dayna Gedney. 

     

    Jessie Potter is thrilled to be working on the Dundas & Carlaw Holiday Corner!  Jessie is a passionate theatre practitioner with professional interests in technical direction, production management, lighting design and sound design.  Born and raised in Vancouver, Jessie is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Political Science & Physical and Environmental Geography) and the National Theatre School of Canada (Production Design and Technical Arts).  She has worked at a variety of theatre companies across Canada, including Canadian Stage, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Blyth Festival, Lower Ossington Theatre and Crow’s Theatre.  A big thanks to everyone who worked so hard on this! The team is committed to developing and facilitating innovative possibilities for engaging audiences and expanding the performance arts reach through Transmedia approaches to performance and outreach.

    Cohort is an evolving Multiplatform and open source toolkit designed to facilitate the technical requirements of interactive and immersive storytelling. It is evolving through partnerships with designers and theatre makers across the country.
