The Dundas and Carlaw Holiday Corner and Market

Dec 1, 2022

The 3rd Annual Dundas and Carlaw Holiday Corner Lights up Streetcar Crowsnest!

The Dundas and Carlaw Holiday Corner brings people together in Toronto's vibrant east end to experience a holiday market and winter fair at Streetcar Crowsnest in Leslieville. Presented in partnership with Magenta Foundation and The Office of Gilbert Li, Snow Days is a delightful winter wonderland window display showcasing the outdoor sporting and leisure activities enjoyed by Canadians from coast to coast.

The mural, which spans across our windows on Carlaw Avenue and on Dundas Street East, is inspired by the Woods Manufacturing Company, whose building, erected in 1908 at 401 Logan Avenue, became one of the first landmarks of our Dundas and Carlaw neighbourhood.

If you are on the hunt for a special gift, from December 9-11 we will be transforming our Studio Theatre into the Holiday Corner Market where local theatre artists will exhibit their crafts, jewelry and amazing treats.

As the centrepiece of our holiday programming, we are presenting Soundstreams' ELECTRIC MESSIAH, a musical masterpiece that will reconnect you with the spirit of the holiday season. Festive music will fill our lobby throughout the month of December, with a selection of talented artists performing live at Crowsnest Corner.  See you around the corner!

For Immediate Release
TORONTO (December 1, 2021) Launching with the unveiling of this year’s seasonal window display, the 3rd annual Dundas and Carlaw Holiday Corner is the most festive place to be this winter.

As the centre piece of holiday programming, Crow’s Theatre presents Soundstreams’ ELECTRIC MESSIAH.
ELECTRIC MESSIAH is an immersive theatrical reimagining of Handel’s masterpiece with musical influences as wide ranging as jazz, blues, hip-hop, gospel, classical, and global. Four extraordinary singers including Lindsay McIntyre (soprano), Elizabeth Shepherd (mezzo), Sharang Sharma (tenor) and Andrew Aldridge (bass), are joined by DJ SlowPitchSound, dancers Libydo and Sophie Dow, and are accompanied by an eclectic instrumental ensemble that seamlessly melds the baroque with electronica.

Never the same two years in a row, this newest holiday tradition features the world premiere of Body, a new interpolation by Canadian composer Lieke van der VoortBody is inspired by Messiah’s libretto, one of the most famous choral works performed around the world during the Christmas season but van der Voort aims to shift the focus from the obvious spiritual side to the more visceral. Hallelujah!

“Reconnect to the music of the holiday season in a way that is surprising, fresh and above all, fun.” blogTO
In addition to the window display reveal, the weekend of December 9-11, will see three days of jam-packed programming at Streetcar Crowsnest, including the Holiday Corner Market, daytime Crowsnest Corner concerts, sweet and seasonal treats at the bar, and performances of RED VELVET in the Guloien Theatre.

Crow’s Theatre and the Magenta Foundation partner once again to present SNOW DAYS, a delightful depiction of outdoor winter activities inspired by Woods Manufacturing Company, located at 401 Logan Avenue. The building, erected in 1908, is one of the first landmarks of the Dundas and Carlaw neighbourhood. Known for its tents, sleeping bags, and outdoor clothing, Woods was one of the largest producers of fibre and canvas products in the country – materials that became essential for the outdoor sporting and leisure activities that epitomize Canada’s image on the world stage.

With the newly minted addition of the Nada Ristich Studio-Gallery to Streetcar Crowsnest, SNOW DAYS, designed by the Office of Gilbert Li, will envelope the entire Dundas and Carlaw corner making use of all the Dundas and Carlaw street-facing windows.

The Holiday Corner Market in the Studio Theatre features artists of the theatre community showing off their other talents including actors Michelle Montieth’s hand-crafted silver jewellery with Japanese glass, Brook Johnson’s sculptures, prints and gift tags, Monique Lund’s leather key chains and bookmarks, and Hailie Seline from The Howland Company with a custom tie-dye apparel; Crow’s Theatre’s collaborator, lighting designer Kimberley Purtell’s stunning photographs; stage managers Arwen MacDonell and her delicious baked goods, Madison Kalbhenn’s hand crafted scrunchies, headbands, and pet bows; plus, handmade crochet critters, felt ornaments, hand-bound notebooks, live-edge wood tables, scented candles, knit scarves, and so much more!

It’s officially the holidays when the zany cast of Ross Petty’s “Panto” takes the stage! This year marks the final appearance of Ross Petty, returning as his most popular villain, Captain Hook in PETER’S FINAL FLIGHT. Presented in association with Crow’s Theatre, tickets and more information can be found at rosspetty.com.
