IDEAS AT CROW'S THEATRE

Sep 5, 2024

CBC Radio One's IDEAS and Crow’s Theatre are back with a second season of IDEAS AT CROW’S THEATRE.

IDEAS AT CROW’S THEATRE is a five-part talk series to be recorded at Crow's Theatre in Toronto, inspired by five plays in the theatre's 2024.25 season. This series is a forum to explore the ideas that animate great art and the crucial questions that shape our world.

Each IDEAS AT CROW’S THEATRE event will feature a 45-minute onstage talk followed by an interview conducted by award-winning CBC Radio One's IDEAS host Nahlah Ayed and will take place on a Sunday morning prior to a matinee performance.

The events, which are free to attend but should be booked in advance, will be recorded for later broadcast on IDEAS*.

MAKING JUSTICE IMAGINABLE
Lex Gill with Nahlah Ayed

September 15 @ 10:30am
Guloien Theatre

Lawyer and human rights advocate Lex Gill explores themes of injustice, defiance, and what it takes to build a better world in a talk inspired by Ibsen's masterpiece ROSMERSHOLM.

Lex Gill is a lawyer working in public interest litigation and class actions, with a practice focused on human rights, state accountability, and economic justice. She is based in Montreal and teaches at McGill University’s Faculty of Law.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Leilani Farha with Nahlah Ayed

December 1 @ 10:30am
Guloien Theatre

Behind the idea of housing, for Leilani Farha, is the idea of home – a "configuration of spaces" with many roles, social and emotional, that play an important part in making us the people we are. But for people to create homes, they need housing- and we all need a better understanding of the relation between the two. This talk will be followed by a 1:30pm performance of THE BIDDING WAR.

ADDITIONAL INFO

All talks take place from 10:30am-12:00 noon in advance of the afternoon play performances. All events take place at Streetcar Crowsnest (345 Carlaw Avenue, Toronto) and are free to attend.

The free ticket is for the talk series only and is available to anyone who wishes to participate. A separate ticket must be purchased for each play performance in order to attend the show as well. (You can always try your luck at the our box office after the event for pay-what-you-can tickets.)

CBC IDEAS Host Nahlah Ayed:
“At a time of polarization and division, we are proud to be part of an effort aimed at bringing meaningful conversations to audiences old and new. Theatre has long been one of the best venues for fostering debate and discussion, where plays tell stories that resonate deeply with our lives.

“These five thinkers will bring deep knowledge and wide curiosity to our collective stage, bringing fresh perspectives to some of the most urgent problems of our time.”

Crow’s Theatre Associate Artistic Director Paolo Santalucia:

“This partnership captures the importance theatre holds in modern culture. It serves as a powerful platform through which the questions shaping our time find meaningful discourse, hopefully fostering a deeper understanding of each other and the world around us.”

* IDEAS streams free anytime on  CBC Listen, and can be heard weekdays at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Radio.  IDEAS AT CROW’S THEATRE will broadcast on CBC’s IDEAS at a later date. For more information visit www.cbc.ca/ideas and subscribe to the weekly IDEAS newsletter.
